About

Kelly is a PhD student in Computer Science at the University of Chicago working with Marshini Chetty in the Amyoli Internet Research Lab with a focus on Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). She is broadly interested in the design of sociotechnical systems—in other words, thinking about how new technology such as artificial intelligence (AI) can and should be embedded effectively in social contexts with multiple stakeholders.

Her PhD research looks at a human-centered approach to AI for science. She is collaborating with Argonne National Lab’s CROCUS initiative and a Chicago community organization to develop tools for communities to interface with, and participate in, the development of AI for urban climate modeling. Her passion for driving real-world innovation extends beyond research to her role conducting deep tech due diligence as an Innovation Fund Associate at the University of Chicago Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation.

Kelly is supported by a Neubauer Family Distinguished Doctoral Fellowship and is an Urban Doctoral Fellow at the Mansueto Institute for Urban Innovation. She holds a MS in Comparative Media Studies from MIT and a dual BA in Computer Science and Economics from Brown University. Prior to grad school, she was a Research Assistant at Microsoft Research (New England) where she worked with researchers in social science, as well as a software engineer at Microsoft and Facebook.
